Last week I was lucky enough to spend five days in Berlin as part of my summer holidays. Anyone who has had the pleasure of visiting this fine city won’t need me to tell them how great it is. But for the uninitiated, let me try and explain.
Unlike many of Europe’s capitals, it has an underlying moodiness which will never be equalled. Whether you’re mooching around East Berlin with its dark streets and oppressing buildings or wandering down Kurfürstendamm admiring the greenery and wealth, there’s something for everyone.
Another thing that strikes you is how simple and easy it is to travel around. Unlike London (where the tubes are a constant battle) or Paris (which leaves your head spinning), jumping on Berlin’s S-Bahn or U-Bahn is almost a pleasure.
I was staying up close to Savignyplatz where, when it came to restaurants, we were spoilt for choice. Tapas one night, Vietnamese the next and a few currywursts thrown in for good measure.
So now we have to ask: What’s the best capital city you’ve ever visited? There’s plenty to choose from…
