What in the World is that Word?
Have you ever been in a situation where you’ve received a text message or an email and it contains a word you just don’t know? It happens to everyone, regardless of what language they speak. Usually of course, you can work out the meaning through the context. But sometimes, well sometimes it’s just impossible.
Luckily in this day and age we have Auntie Google to help us, and this week I had to hold my hands up and ask for guidance. The word was ‘insalubrious’. It sounded negative and indeed it was. Here was the definition:
“Adjective: (of a place) seedy and run-down; unwholesome.”
It was being used to describe a restaurant. And it was a good description, as I will never eat there again. But anyway, it just goes to show that no matter how well you know a language, it can surprise you on a daily basis.
Have you ever stumbled across any words where you have thought “I just don’t know what that means?”
We’d love to hear some of your stories.
