A Fabulous February

A Fabulous February

Well, It’s been a few weeks since all those New Year Resolutions were made.
Cut back on the chocolate, get to the gym, spend less time in front of the TV. But how many have you actually been able to keep? It’s not an easy question to answer is it :-) If you’re like us here up at English Matters Towers, then you have probably ditched most of them by now. But it’s still not too late! See, we think that February might actually be a better month to begin with all the…Czytaj dalej …
The Gift of Giving

The Gift of Giving

Ask a group of people what their favourite part of Christmas is and most likely you’ll get a different bunch of answers. For some it will be the Christmas roast - turkey, stuffing and all the trimmings. For others it may be the time spent with family, the days free from work or the chance to build snowmen and sledge down hills. Presents are also a huge part for many people, not only receiving them, but giving them too. The look on my nephew and nieces’ faces as they get to open their…Czytaj dalej …
Sushi Sundays

Sushi Sundays

Last week two good friends of mine made their way over from London and we wanted to take them out for a nice meal, something they would remember. Italian is too obvious, Indian restaurants are generally poor in Poland and pierogi isn’t the most exciting food in the world! So we settled on sushi. One foreign cuisine that Poland has lapped up is sushi. A few years ago, the raw fish industry took off over here and rather than just being a short-lived fad, it’s still something that’s proving popular to this day.…Czytaj dalej …
Christmas Cheer?

Christmas Cheer?

During a recent trip back to the UK to help celebrate Bonfire Night with my family, I was actually quite shocked by just how much Christmas was being celebrated already. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not one of these folk who say we should only enjoy Christmas on the official day, in fact I love the build up to the big event just as much as the day itself. But shops pumping out Christmas songs, and adverts on TV in October? Come on, that’s just not acceptable in my book. I’ve always enjoyed…Czytaj dalej …
Trick or Treat!

Trick or Treat!

So, like most self-respecting citizens, I recently purchased a rather large box full of sweets and candies to sit next to my front door in preparation for kids coming past on Halloween.
Now, I don’t know about you but when I was a young boy, this was one of the highlights of the year and I used to look forward to it for months. These days it seems that pubs and shops are more inclined to get the decorations up and their staff are more interested in dressing up than local children are.…Czytaj dalej …
Open Mic – Alright!

Open Mic – Alright!

When it comes to entertainment, those that know me will tell you Karaoke is not something I particularly enjoy. Why people are quite happy to sit around and listen to drunken fools butcher their favourite songs is something I will never understand. However, the idea of a good old Open Mic night is a different kettle of fish. There is a proud dignity in people standing up in front of a microphone, picking up a guitar and performing a song for everyone else to enjoy. Last weekend, myself and some friends found ourselves…Czytaj dalej …

The last week or so has had an abundance of games on for football fans to watch, all of which were qualifiers for the World Cup 2018, set to take place in Russia next year. Despite their poor performances (dear me it they were painful to watch at times!) England finished top of their group and are now guaranteed a spot in the tournament. I’m not sure quite how long they will last against some of the big boys, but they need to sharpen the squad up a bit to have any real…Czytaj dalej …
Suits You Sir!

Suits You Sir!

For some unknown reason, two sets of very good friends have decided to get married at the end of this month (weddings in late October? Really?), so I decided now was a good time to treat myself to a new suit. I’ve always been quite traditional when it comes to my formal wear, generally opting for a pair of standard dark trousers and matching jacket, with a snazzy yellow or purple tie underneath. I’m not sure why, but it always seems to do the trick.
However, this time I decided to be a…Czytaj dalej …
Stranded!

Stranded!

Anyone who’s been following the news over the last few weeks will no doubt be aware of the terrible predicament Ryanair and its customers are in. With numerous flights cancelled, thousands of passengers have been left in dire straights and the situation looks extremely messy. The whole thing got me thinking about some of the times I’ve been stuck in airports and to be honest they are (closely followed by dentist’s waiting rooms) some of the worst places in the world to be sat in. I remember spending one night in an airport…Czytaj dalej …
A Good Deed For The Day

A Good Deed For The Day

Here’s a simple question for you all out there: When was the last time you made somebody smile?
I’m not talking about friends, or a joke you’ve told, but the last time you’ve done a good deed for someone. The reason I ask, is this week I stopped into my usual cafe on the way to work and sat down with a cup of tea to read the paper. As I went to leave and pay my tab, I found out that it had already been paid for by an anonymous person who…Czytaj dalej …
